After so many days of rain and gloom, the sun shone brightly on Sunday, April 5, as the West End Farmers Market opened for the 2024 season. This earlier-than-usual opening day found two dozen vendors and a steady stream of buyers who were happy to have “our market” back in Brenman Park.Farmers Market Opening Day 2024 2Photos from opening day of the Ben Brenman Farmers Market, courtesy of our Cameron Station neighbor Marian.

Every Sunday until December 29, 2024, from 8:30am to 1pm, visitors will find an array of exhibitors selling fresh fruits and vegetables, just-baked breads and sweets, unique crafts, clothing for children and adults, flowers and plants, candles and soaps, and so much more.

In addition to a variety of vendors – old favorites and new, with more coming as the season progresses – here’s what you can expect:Williams Family at Farmers Market 2024Pictured are Bernice Williams, Rubie Williams, Dawnta Million, and Shawn Catron.

  • Enjoy the melodic tunes of the talented saxophone player Antonio, creating the perfect soundtrack for shopping. And, don’t be surprised if other musical entertainers appear during the season.
  • Engage directly with leaders from government agencies, local nonprofits, and political offices – as well as political hopefuls – who set up tables to talk with folks face-to-face.
  • Foster sustainability by using the city-provided compost drop-off stations, allowing you to nourish both yourself and the earth.

This is the sixth year that members of the Williams family have jointly owned and operated the West End Farmers Market.

This year, Rubie and Shawn, alongside other committed women, embarked on an additional endeavor. They’ve established Believe, a local nonprofit dedicated to alleviating poverty and enhancing the lives of those facing hardship. Visit the Believe table at the market’s entrance to learn more about their impactful mission and visit them online at believenonprofit.com.

Rubie and her family do not take the market’s success for granted.

“Opening day was a blessed day and a very successful day for the vendors as well as our clients, who were so excited to see us back up and running!” she said. “Thank you from the West End Farmers Market team to the beautiful Cameron Station community for your continued support!”

Pat Sugrue is an original owner, moving to Cameron Station with her husband Tom in the fall of 1999. She was a member of the first Compass Crew, and later served as Editor-in-Chief for nine years. Pat’s professional career was in advertising – 30+ years in ad agencies in every department except art (no talent at all!); but her favorite position was copywriter, which she felt made a good fit for The Compass. She warns that she is here to stay, regardless of the format!
