"The bicycle is the noblest invention of mankind."

~ William Saroyan

Eleven years ago, when our dear friends told us about the amazing community they lived in, my wife and I were a bit skeptical.  How could a neighborhood inside the Beltway be as quiet, quaint, and safe as they described. Then we visited Cameron Station and found it was all that and more.  Two years of renting a Main Street condo and nine years of owning our Carlton Place condo later, we appreciate our community more every year.

My wife and I love to see so many of our neighbors outside walking with children and fur babies, running, and enjoying our numerous grassy spaces.  One of our favorite pastimes is biking.  We appreciate the easy access to miles of bike paths and the built-in bike storage rooms that a number of the buildings offer.

As much as we love biking, we know that each bicycle has its time to be ridden and loved, and it has a time to move on for others to enjoy.  For our Cameron Community, we have an opportunity to share our loved - but no longer ridden - bikes with others through a bike drive and collection by a nearby bicycle co-op:  Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative.

If you or your family have bikes that are not being ridden, this is for YOU!

  • Bring them over to the Cameron Club at the end of our community yard sale (Saturday, April 26, 2025, 1-2pm) or call the Cameron Station management office to coordinate a drop-off any day the following week (Monday-Friday, April 28 - May 2, 2025, between 9:30am and 4pm).
  • You will receive a receipt for your charitable donation, and your bike will be prepped for a new home through our friends at Vélocity.

Founded 16 years ago, Vélocity (velocity.coop.org) is our nearby community-based, volunteer-run bicycle co-op in Alexandria, with a vision to grow and empower a more inclusive biking community through affordability, education, and embracing the fun of riding.  In addition to their two small retail shops that help fund the co-op, they host educational events for bike safety and bike maintenance; avail their shops for DIY bike maintenance; and perhaps most importantly they donate refurbished bikes to neighbors around the area.

So, if you have bikes that are ready to be loved in a new home, bring them to the Cameron Club during our community bike drive.  You will feel great about your donation, appreciate the extra space you will create, and you may even have a vision for your next generation of “the noblest invention.”

Bill Metheny, and his wife Lori, have enjoyed living in Cameron Station since 2014 when friends told them about this great neighborhood.  After renting for a couple of years, they committed and moved into Carlton Place Condominiums.  Bill, Lori and their family moved around the world with the military before settling in Northern Virginia.  Bill and Lori love our neighborhood and the many activities the area offers.  They especially like biking with friends locally, around the US, and occasionally in other countries.
