May is in full bloom, bringing a mix of playful traditions, comfort foods, and a few delightfully unexpected reasons to celebrate. From pizza parties to lost socks, and burgers to beverages, this month invites you to enjoy the lighter side of everyday moments. Thanks to Carla Besosa for sharing another creative and entertaining lineup of days to celebrate. Take a look and find your favorite way to join in the fun.
May’s blossoms are a reminder to bloom where you are planted.

May 1 NO PANTS DAY
Open to interpretation. Wear your skirts and kilts, or wear nothing from the waist down! Possibly a weather-dependent celebration!
May 2 HERB DAY
For cooking? For smoking? Or perhaps you have a buddy named Herb.
May 6 BEVERAGE DAY
The first half of the day, my go-to is Diet Coke with lemon. The second half of the day, an oaky Chardonnay. How oaky? The whole tree! The most consumed beverage in America is bottled water, followed by coffee. My new favorite at Cameron Cafe is the Grapefruit Nixie.
May 9 LOST SOCK MEMORIAL DAY
Socks mysteriously disappear in the dryer. You put two in, one comes out. It’s a well-known fact that dryers eat socks. Don’t stress; just embrace the situation on this momentous occasion!
May 11 TWILIGHT ZONE DAY
Remember Rod Serling’s reality-bending show from the 60’s? One of my all-time favorites! The show was so popular that the term Twilight Zone is commonly used euphemistically.
May 15 PIZZA PARTY DAY
If you make your own, good for you. Otherwise, there are two new additions to Alexandria’s pizza scene: Pizzato Pizza in Landmark Plaza, and Pupatella on Slaters Lane. For a unique pizza experience, try Stracci Pizza on Hume Ave. in Del Ray.
May 28 HAMBURGER DAY
“I’d gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” The famous mantra of Popeye character Wimpy. My current faves include the Smashburgers at Junction Bakery & Bistro, and Royal Restaurant (both in Del Ray). Yelp’s picks are Holy Cow, The Majestic, and Bun Papa. It’s all subjective; find your own burger of choice!
