The Cameron Station Civic Association held its virtual membership meeting on May 7, 2025. Our guest speakers were Christian Brandt, Urban Planner III for the Department of Planning & Zoning, discussing the Duke Street Planning Process, and Ryan Freed, Climate Action Officer for the Office of Climate Action, discussing the Eco-City Homes program.
Christian Brandt noted that the Duke Street Planning Process will address land uses along Duke Street from Landmark Mall to the King Street Metro. The northern and southern boundaries for the plan have yet to be determined. Christian noted however, that the plan will not make any changes to the Cameron Station community. The plan will identify locations for new parks and open space, identify appropriate land uses and design, address sidewalks, safety, and infrastructure. Christian noted that the city has begun this process in order to be proactive and set expectations for developers coming to build in this corridor rather than being reactive to developers seeking to build piecemeal. The process is expected to last through January 2027 and city staff intends to listen to residents since they “are the experts in [their] neighborhood.” The kick-off meeting will be on June 9 at 7:00 PM at the Patrick Henry Recreation Center at 4653 Taney Avenue. Ryan Freed stated that the Eco-City Homes initiative is part of Eco-City Alexandria. Eco-City Alexandria is a strategic effort to achieve sustainability by creating an environmentally, economically, and socially healthy city. Alexandria’s climate goals include: (1) reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 50% by 2030 and 80% by 2050; (2) the city using 100% renewables for city facilities by 2030; (3) reducing energy use 25% by 2027; (4) having 40% tree canopy by 2025; and (5) having 7.3 acres of open space per 1,000 residents. To achieve the GHG emission goals, 53,000 homes and 13 million square feet of commercial office space needs to be retrofitted. Eco-City Homes is designed to be a one-stop place where you can go online to find guidance on how to be sustainable while remaining comfortable and lowering energy costs.
