Some neighbors have a special way of making a community feel like home. Lorraine “Mama Joyce” Douglas is one of them.
Whether she’s sharing a meal, sending a thoughtful card, helping a neighbor, or greeting friends during her daily stop at Cameron Café, Joyce has spent years making life brighter for those around her.
At 92 years young, her kindness and enthusiasm for Cameron Station continue to inspire neighbors of all ages. Her generosity, community involvement, and genuine concern for others embody the spirit of the Mark Pillow Community Spirit Award.
Established in 2006 in memory of Cameron Station resident Mark Pillow, the award honors neighbors whose kindness, generosity, and dedication make our community a better place to live.
We are delighted to recognize Lorraine “Mama Joyce” Douglas as the 2026 Mark Pillow Community Spirit Award recipient.
The following nomination, submitted by fellow Cameron Station residents, offers a heartfelt look at the many ways Joyce has touched the lives of those around her.
The Nomination
On behalf of my fellow Cameron Station residents, we would like to nominate Lorraine “Mama Joyce” Douglas for the 2026 Mark Pillow Award.
Joyce exemplifies what it means to be a good neighbor. Her love and commitment to preserve the well-being of our community is an inspiration to all who know her. A very young 92, Joyce is an independent woman with an energetic and positive approach to life. She and her husband Bob moved to Cameron Station after retiring from their family business and spent much of their retirement time volunteering and helping anyone who needed help. Bob passed away 17 years ago, but Joyce continues this work in Bob’s memory, both inside and outside our community.
Joyce spent years serving meals at Carpenters Shelter in Old Town Alexandria, and is an avid supporter of the annual Carpenters Shelter Cook-Off, their most important fundraiser. Inside Cameron Station, Joyce can often be found making and serving meals to neighbors who are sick or need a little TLC. In fact, if you are sick, she will also make time to visit with you; and Joyce regularly helps anyone who may need assistance with a drive to the doctor or grocery store.
If you, or anyone in your family, including your pet, has celebrated an event or lost a loved one, Joyce will take the time to write and mail a card with her thoughts or send a small gift of acknowledgement. She will collect empty bottles to recycle for her neighbors. Don’t know what to do with all the cards and notepaper and pens from charities? Joyce collects them from neighbors and mails them to a Virginia hospital for the mentally ill.
Joyce is a big supporter of Cameron Station retailers and our community events. Many of us know her as “Mama Joyce,” a staple at the Cameron Cafe where she stops every morning after her walk through Brenman Park. Or you may catch her in the afternoon running in for a tea on her way to the post-office or grocery store. She is a regular at Wine Wednesdays and usually has a prime seat for the musical acts at the Café.
Joyce keeps a watchful eye out for the safety and well-being of her community. She loves meeting and welcoming new residents, and will take time to talk with those walking by or to folks experiencing our neighborhood for the first time. Joyce always has a positive story to share about our Cameron Station family.
Joyce exemplifies the community spirit the Pillow Award was designed to celebrate. We believe Joyce is a very qualified candidate for this award, and we hope you will honor her with this recognition for her commitment to, and love of, our wonderful community.
Congratulations, Mama Joyce!
Thank you for the countless ways you care for your neighbors, support our community, and remind us that even the smallest gestures can make a meaningful difference. Cameron Station is fortunate to have you as part of our neighborhood family. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!
