Fall is finally here! The smell of pumpkin spice lattes and apple cider donuts is in the air! If you’re anything like me, this beloved time of year is the perfect opportunity for some leaf-peeping. Peak fall foliage is expected in Virginia mid to late October this year.
Now sure, we have Shenandoah National Park 70 miles away, but here in Northern Virginia, especially here in Alexandria, there are also some great spots to witness the changing of the leaves. Here are a couple of nearby spots if you don’t feel like making a trip down to Skyline Drive (although I do also recommend a trip there!).
- Ben Brenman Park (right in our backyard!)
- Fort Ward Park - 4301 W Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA 22304
- Jones Point Park - Woodrow Wilson Bridge, Alexandria, VA 22314
- Monticello Park - 320 Beverley Drive, Alexandria, VA 22305-1704
- Great Falls Park - 9200 Old Dominion Drive, McLean, VA 22102
- Bull Run/Occoquan Trail - 13220 Yates Ford Road, Clifton, VA 20124
- Mt. Vernon Trail (going south toward Mt. Vernon has beautiful foliage!) - 1198 George Washington Memorial Parkway, Alexandria, Va 22314
- Scenic drive down George Washington Memorial Parkway
Now if you’re willing to take a much longer day trip, here are my favorite leaf-peeping spots in the DMV!
- Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park (68 miles)
- Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (50 miles)
- Catoctin Mountain Park (60 miles)
