Do you have some extra time and are looking for a way to give back to your community? Or maybe you love books and love talking with others about them. Maybe you are looking for ways to meet new and interesting people. Volunteering for the Friends of the Beatley Central Library provides all these opportunities and more.
The Friends group is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that raises funds, mostly through twice yearly book sales, to support the Beatley Central Library.
When I started volunteering, I really enjoyed sorting and organizing the donated books and chatting with the other sorters on my shift. But when I worked my first book sale and saw the many, many, happy faces when people left with a new stack of books to read, I was completely sold on the group. Then when I learned what a significant contribution the proceeds from these sales make to the Beatley Library, I was proud to be a member.
Did you know that although the city pays for the library building and staff salaries, the Friends of the library pay for almost all of the activities, classes, art supplies, performers, etc.? We even bought the new colorful chairs you see throughout the library, as well as the plants for the new reading garden.
Currently, we are seeking a passionate individual interested in serving as Vice President of our Board. This person would work closely with our Board President for one year and then transition into the role of President.
The Friends is a vibrant and committed group of volunteers. Interested? Contact Kay Brown at kayb1121@gmail.com.
Kay Brown is Board President of the Friends of the Beatley Central Library. She has lived in Cameron Station since spring 2015 and has already moved once since then but stayed within the community. She also tutors at Tucker Elementary School and, after 30+ years at the Government Accountability Office, believes in giving back locally.
